Every December, anticipation starts building for the upcoming PDC World Darts Championship, now held at the Alexandra Palace in London after it was held at Purfleet’s Circus Tavern for the first 14 years. The tournament starts in December and finishes in early January.

The genesis of this tournament began in 1994 as the result of a disagreement with the British Darts Organization. Some of the top players of the BDO decided to form their own championship, which started out as the WDC and eventually became the PDC. It is now recognized as a more prominent championship than what its competitive forerunner still offers, even though this debate continues. A good portion of the higher quality players have joined the exodus to the PDC, with only a small number moving in the other direction. Starting with only 16 players in 1992 it now has over 400, which caused the BDO to lose a substantial amount of their top players to them. Good examples of this departure are Raymond van Barneveld, a three time BDO champion in 2006, and Robert Thornton, a top-rated player in 2007.

In the 14 years of the tournament, Phil Taylor has overshadowed the rest of the field with 12 titles in the first 16 years of the event, while competing in the finals an amazing 15 times. John Part is the only other player to have won it at least twice with his two victories in 2003 and 2008. Dennis Priestley, who won the first year of the championship in 1994, and Raymond van Barneveld in 2007, are the only single winners.

The 2007 classic battle between Taylor and van Barneveld is one of the more memorable finals, which attracted a record television audience for a darts match with over one million viewers. Barneveld came out on top in a 7-6 sudden-death finish, described by Taylor as his greatest final ever. Taylor and Barneveld join Dennis Priestly and John Part as the only victors in both the PDC and BDO championships.

Another memorable finals shoot-out was in 2004 when Kevin Painter, an emotional fan favorite, took a strong early lead against Phil Taylor after an impressive charge in the earlier rounds. Taylor came back to beat Painter in sudden-death.

Dart history continues to be made in this world event, which has even influenced the creation of a video game and a growing interest in a once “local” game. Prize money for the championship continues to move upward with good sponsorship. It has been growing in popularity every year, especially in the UK where multitudes of fans watch these masters display their unique skills of precision in a pastime that they themselves enjoy playing in local pubs everywhere!
