Aston Villa vs Liverpool

Aston Villa vs Liverpool - Premier League

Aston Villa have long been the top team from the midlands. Still the best they have ever done in terms of the Premier League is the second they achieved in the very first year of the change from the old 1st Division. As a firm member of a group of "big clubs" whose fans seem to demand far more than the history of the club actually dictates should be normal (Take Newcastle and Spurs as other examples) Aston Villa have always promised to break into the top 4 once again. The good news for Aston Villa fans is that this year just might be this year, yes they recently lost to Arsenal but so far they've already beat Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea - all away from home. In this most topsy turvy of Premier League seasons that's enough to put Villa in 5th place with a game in hand on Spurs above them. A game in hand against Liverpool who have had a terrible season so far and are currently in 7th place, way of the 4th that Benitez has promised as a minimum finish.

Unusually in a game against Liverpool, Aston Villa have to be favorites for this one. Both teams have relatively few injury problems although there will be a couple of noticeable absences due to injury. Javier Mascherano will still be suspended for Liverpool and Ashley Young gets to sit this one out after picking up his 5th booking of the season. I say it's unusual for Aston Villa to be fancied in a game like this because despite their successes against the teams above them this season they have a really poor record against Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. You have to go back to 1998 to find a home Aston Villa win. So that's the toss up, history versus form, who'll win?

For Liverpool this is another must win game. They must build on the weekends victory against Wolves is they want to realise their managers obscure promise of at least a 4th place finish in the Premier League. In a season that promised so much who'd have thought that 4th place would be a dream finish? Whilst a victory against Wolves may have been seen as run of the mill a victory over a resurgent Aston Villa may just be the kick start Liverpool need to get going, and just in time for the new year as well.

Aston Villa vs Liverpool is definitely the pick of Tuesdays Premier League games, Villa Park may witness something special with this one.
